Skardu is both a destination and a gateway. Travellers come for lakes, forts, valleys, cold-desert landscapes and access toward some of the world’s highest mountains. Distances are deceptive, roads can be slow, and the best journeys leave room for changes.
What to see around Skardu
Kharpocho Fort, Satpara Lake, the Kachura lakes and the cold-desert landscapes around Katpana are common starting points. Shigar adds a different mix of fort architecture, village life and routes leading deeper into the mountains. Deosai is seasonal and high-altitude; access must be checked locally rather than assumed from an old itinerary.
Arriving by air or road
Flights from Islamabad can be convenient and scenic but remain weather-dependent. Road travel takes much longer and requires an experienced driver, rest stops and realistic expectations. If travelling by road, do not measure the journey only by distance; surface conditions, traffic and active work can change the timing.
A sensible four-day outline
- Day one: arrive, rest and explore a nearby viewpoint or bazaar.
- Day two: visit selected lakes and Kharpocho Fort without packing every stop into one afternoon.
- Day three: take a planned excursion toward Shigar or another accessible valley.
- Day four: hold for weather, a second valley or a slower cultural day.
Seasonal planning
Summer normally provides the broadest access, while spring and autumn can offer quieter landscapes and colder evenings. Winter travel requires greater flexibility, appropriate clothing and current information about roads and services. Even in summer, high plateaus and evenings may be cold.
Altitude, sun and hydration
High altitude, dry air and strong sun can cause fatigue more quickly than expected. Drink water, use sun protection, wear layers and avoid intense activity immediately after arrival. Anyone with medical concerns should speak with a qualified health professional before planning demanding treks or remote travel.
Drivers, guides and remote routes
Choose experienced local drivers for rough or unfamiliar roads. Confirm what the quoted excursion includes, how many hours are realistic and whether weather can change the route. Trekking and mountaineering require specialized planning, appropriate permits where applicable, proper insurance and qualified local support.
Travel responsibly
Keep rubbish with you until it can be disposed of properly. Do not drive off established tracks for a photograph, disturb wildlife or enter farms and village spaces without permission. Buy locally where practical and ask before photographing residents.
